Navagraha Sthalams of Thondai Mandalam

There are 9 temples at the outskirts of Chennai dedicated to the Navagrahams. Similar to Kumbakonam, our ancestors have built temples for all 9 planets in the then Thondai Mandalam.

All these temples are built with the purpose that in those days traveling all the way to Kumbakonam from this part of the country was highly tedious.

All of them belong to the Chozha period with brilliant architecture and divinity. Few of these temples are in the state of neglect where others still look fresh and new even after centuries.

The main deities of all these temples are Lord Shiva in different names. In few places the main deity, Lord Shiva Himself, represent the planet and so there is no separate shrine for the respective Graham in the temple.

As a recap I put this post here to have a collective view of all 9 Navagraha temples in Chennai, which I thought would be easy for people to view them from a single page.

If planned well, one can visit all these temples in a day itself, as most of them lie on the same route (from Porur to Somangalam) except the one at Poondhamalli.

Here is the list of the Navagraha temples located in Chennai. Click on the names of the temple for descriptions.

Kolappaakkam Sri Agatheeswarar Temple
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Suryan

Somangalam Sri Somanaadheeswarar Temple
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Chandran

Poondhamalli Sri Vaidheeswarar Temple (Uthara Vaidheeswaran Koil)
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Angaaragan

Kovur Sri Sundhareswarar Temple
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Budhan

Porur Sri Ramanaadheswarar Temple (Uthara Raameswaram)
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Guru

Maangaadu Sri Velleeswarar Temple
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Sukran

Pozhichalur Sri Agatheeswarar Temple (Vada Thirunallaaru)
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Saneeswarar

Gerugambaakkam Sri Neelakandeswarar Temple
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Kethu

Kunrathur Sri Naageswarar Temple (Vada Thirunaageswaram)
Navagraha Sthalam for Sri Raahu

All these temples are of historic importance and recently Tamilnadu Tourism has started operating package trip to these Chennai Navagraha temples.

  1. Highly Respected Saravanan Sir,

Words cannot describe my happyness and nostalgia what I feel when I see your master piece of Mangaadu. I visited Mangaadu way back in 1981 and you brought it to me alongwith my good old days. I owe you my million thanks.
What Appar, Sundarar and Gna Sambandhar did in those days you are doing it individually. May GOD bless you with Health & Wealth to keep you going.

  2. even am planning to do some thing like this. Take up a particular highway say NH 47 and cover up all small to big temples enroute and cover up the well refined and complete history of these temples. Not only just temples, i want to cover up the Mosques and Churches enroute that highway. Its a tough task and am thinking of like minded people to join hands and then we can get funding to help us.

  3. Dear Saravanan,
It was to my delight that I found your blog. I have already visited Somangaam after reading your pages. And I intend to visit every single of these temples one by one, as time permits.
Your efforts at presenting these temples are laudable, please continue this noble upasana!

Definetely this is a very good work. At the same time I request you include the route, location/landmark and how can one reach this places. Eventhough this takes extra time and extra work, it will help those who wants to visit and make them visit.

  6. Dear Sir,
Your coverup made me speechless. Recently I had been to Sri Valleeswarar temple in Mangadu where inside details of various Navagraha temples around chennai has been written. Since then I have been wanting to visit these temples but the details and locations were not available to me. Upon seen the details provided by you, i am really indebted your devotion for making such nice cover up. May God bless you.

Yes. Padi Thiruvalidhayam temple is a Guru Sthalam. And Sri Guru Bhagavan has a separate Shrine there.
But Porur temple only is listed under the Navagraha Sthalams of Chennai or Thondai Mandalam.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If we go through the legend,it would be more appropriate to list Padi Thiruvalidhayam temple as Guru Sthalam under the Navagraha Sthalams of Chennai or Thondai Mandalam, because Guru Bhagavan prayed sivan here.
But Porur temple listed may be due to its close distance to other Navagraha Sthalams of Chennai or Thondai Mandalam.
